Horror Breakout 'It Follows' to Get Sequel Treatment with 'They Follow,' with Director David Robert Mitchell & star Maika Monroe to Return

One of the biggest horror hits of the 2010's It Follows is finally getting a sequel. The report comes from The Playlist, where they confirm that the production banner NEON will distribute and move ahead with plans for the follow-up titled, They Follow. Additionally, David Robert Mitchell, who directed the first film will return to direct, while Maika Monroe will also return to star.

The first film was a very inventive and anxiety-driven psychological horror film that starred Monroe as they lead who is followed by a foreign supernatural force after a sexual encounter, playing off the idea that this unknown entity could be sexually transmitted. The film became a cult classic grossing over $23 million off a budget of just over $1 million. The movie is scheduled to go into production to start off 2024 after the SAG strike is wrapped up with the studios.

Since the release of It Follows, David Robert Mitchell has been relatively under the radar, having only worked on 2018's Under the Silver Lake since its release. The latter film was a postmodern noir dramedy that starred Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough and Topher Grace. Since then, he's been attached to direct a number of projects, most recently a mystery project with Anne Hathaway over at Bad Robot, but They Follow seems to be next on the docket.

Monroe has also been unable to capitalize on the heels of the success of the indie horror film. She followed up her lead role as Jay Height by going the franchise route and starring in Independence Day: Resurgence which underwhelmed critically and at the box-office. Since then, her most prominent role is a supporting turn in Shia LaBeouf's 2019 autobiographical drama Honey Boy, so a return to the genre that made her known might be for the best.
