Michelle Yeoh cast as Lead in Prime Video sequel series, 'Blade Runner 2099'

    Michelle Yeoh, best known for her Oscar-winning turn in Everything Everywhere All at Once, has been cast as the lead in the upcoming Prime Video series, Blade Runner 2099. Plot details are scarce at the moment, however, at this time, Cinema Wave can report that Yeoh will play a replicant named Orwen who is near the end of her life in the show.

    Yeoh won the Academy Award for Actress in a Leading Role in 2023's breakout A24 film, Everything Everywhere All at Once, making her the first Asian person to win the award. Additionally, she earned praise from many other award shows throughout the circuit, earning a SAG Award, Independent Spirit Award and Golden Globe for her role the movie. Yeoh is also recognizable for her work in other films such as Crazy Rich Asians, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the James Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies.

    She has been increasingly busy over the last few years leading streaming series such as The Witcher: Blood Origin for Netflix, American Born Chinese for Disney+ and The Brothers Sun for Netflix. She also voiced Airazor in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023, as well as having a role in A Haunting in Venice, the latest in the Hercule Poirot franchise led by Kenneth Branagh. Yeoh will next join the Avatar franchise in the three subsequent films launching in 2025, 2027 and 2029 respectively. She'll also star in the Paramount+ original film, Star Trek: Section 31.

    Ridley Scott, who directed the very first Blade Runner film, and executive produced Blade Runner 2049 announced the live-action series back in November 2021 with development beginning at Amazon in February 2022. Scott will return to executive produce the show with Silka Luisa (Shining Girls) acting as showrunner. Jonathan van Tulleken, who recently directed two episodes of the breakout FX series, Shogun, will direct the first two episodes of the series.

    There is no release date set for the show currently.
