Todd Phillips to direct Joker origin movie, produced by Martin Scorsese spanning the start of DC spinoff films separate from the DCEU

Image from Indiewire
By Darian Scalamoni
Within Hollywood, there’s no such thing as a surprising development but this is the most puzzling that I’ve seen in years. According to multiple sources, Todd Phillips (The Hangover, War Dogs) will direct an origin movie based on the legendary DC Comics villain, The Joker. Even more shocking is that, Martin Scorsese will produce the film which is being sold as a movie in the same vein as his earlier efforts, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The King of Comedy.

This is BIG news and honestly the most intriguing project I’ve heard in a very, very long time. It is also known that Jared Leto, who portrayed the Clown Prince of Gotham in Suicide Squad will not reprise his role in this movie, yet it’s expected to take place in the early-80s in Gotham City. For super fans of the current DC Extended Universe which features Batman v. Superman, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman, this origin spinoff will have not have any connection to these aforementioned movies. Instead, it will jumpstart DC’s other division of movies that will be filmmaker driven, making singular stories based on characters from the comics. Similar to what Fox did this year with Logan.

On one side, it could lead to some pretty great movies but for hardcore comic book movie fans, it could be incredibly confusing. Jared Leto’s Joker still exists but it has nothing to do with this movie that will also feature The Joker. It could dilute the product dramatically and with the current state of DC Films with the loss of directors, stars and production reshoots, it could backfire rather quickly. Having said that, a gritty, dark crime movie based on one of my favorite characters in history backed by Scorsese and Phillips is interesting enough to get me in a seat at the theater.

Will Ferrell goes dramatic for his next two projects, 'American Huckster' and 'The 100-Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared'

Image from The Hollywood Reporter
By Darian Scalamoni
Will Ferrell is one of comedy’s biggest treasures from his work which began on the iconic sketch show, Saturday Night Live and evolved to legendary comedic performances in films such as Anchorman, Step Brothers and The Other Guys. He’s evolving into some more dramatic work in the near future and the Tracking Board has the latest on his upcoming projects.

Ferrell is attached to star in the American adaptation of the book, The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. The 2012 book that was written by Jonas Jonasson has been acquired by CBS Films and will be the second feature based on the book. The first was a Swedish film adapted in 2013 which earned a foreign language Oscar nomination. Jason George, who has produced the upcoming season of Narcos will direct the movie. It follows a man named Allan who escapes his nursing home on the night of his 100th birthday and has an adventure that sees his adventurous past clash with the present day.

According to the Tracking Board, Ferrell is also circling American Huckster. Another drama in which he would play Chuck Blazer, the controversial FIFA administrator who later became a government informant on widespread corruption in the sport of soccer who died this past July.

Ferrell recently starred in The House alongside Amy Poehler and will also be seen in Daddy’s Home 2 with Mark Wahlberg, Mel Gibson and John Lithgow. He just wrapped Holmes and Watson, as well. The comedic re-telling of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson has Ferrell and actor buddy, John C. Reilly in the starring roles for the film which hits theaters on November 9th, 2018.

Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth to star in Drew Goddard's 'Bad Times at the El Royale'

Two actors who have blockbuster comic-book flicks due out in the next 3 months will be teaming for a thriller from Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods). According to the Tracking Board, Chris Hemsworth and Jeff Bridges will star in Bad Times at the El Royale. The report also notes that Cailee Spaeny is in talks for another role within the film.

The movie is an ensemble-led movie that takes place in a broken down, shady motel near Lake Tahoe. The film is set in the 60s and we can confirm that Bridges will play a priest who is suffering through unfortunate times named Father Daniel Flynn. The cast will also include a vacuum cleaner salesman, two female criminals, a male cult leader, a desk clerk and an African-American singer.

As far as the latter character, Beyonce Knowles is said to have been courted for the role while Tom Holland, best known as playing the titular character in Spider-Man: Homecoming has passed on the project. Goddard will direct, produce and write the film which is expected to begin shooting in January.

Bridges is coming off of the indie film, The Only Living Boy in New York and can be seen next month in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Hemsworth will be seen reprising his role as the god of thunder, Thor in Thor: Ragnarok which hits theaters in November.

'The Defenders' Season 1 Review

Image from Coming Soon
By Diego Coya
The Defenders is the most recent marvel Netflix show that follows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist; it is essentially The Avengers for the Netflix Marvel superhero shows. The story follows the five fingers of The Hand, who are teaming up to bring destruction to New York. This leads to the superheroes uniting together and to try to stop this destruction from happening. The series also shows the personal challenges that each individual hero is going through and progressively they realize that they will become stronger if they team up with each other. This leads to the Marvel Netflix show that is simply a blast to watch.

I had many expectations regarding The Defenders. Even though I was disappointed with Marvel’s previous Netflix series Iron Fist, it never diminished my excitement for this series. As someone who really enjoyed Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and absolutely adored Daredevil, I was excited to see how all these characters would interact with each other. I can say without hesitation that the two years of build up to this series was certainly worth it. This show is a lot of fun and it is consistently entertaining. The action scenes are also really well done, particularly an action scene that is at the end of episode three. While they never reach the heights of Daredevil, they still hold on their own fairly well

Even though the series is only eight episodes long, it felt like it was the perfect amount of episodes that it needed to be. A big part of that is due to how well the pacing is. I have heard many complaints about the pilot episode having too much build up, which is silly because realistically the characters wouldn’t meet right away and start teaming up. Even though the first episode shows what each character is going through, it is still riveting to watch. I never felt like the show dragged.

The performances from everyone are exceptionally good. Charlie Cox once again knocks it out of the park as Matt Murdoch/Daredevil; the viewer is able to see no matter how hard he tries to move on from Daredevil, he can’t seem to move on from his hero lifestyle. Krysten Ritter once again shines in her role as Jessica Jones; she’s sarcastic, hilarious, ad has no remorse for anything she says or does. Mike Colter as Luke Cage was also terrific; he really plays the role of Luke Cage perfectly and I honestly can’t see anyone else playing him because Colter embodies the character so well. Finn Jones improves immensely from Iron First and brings a more likeable presence to this character. The chemistry between these characters is also just fantastic.

When I heard that Sigourney Weaver was going to be the villain, I was incredibly excited. I seem to be in the minority when I say that I was disappointed with her character. Weaver does not give a bad performance in the slightest, but her character is just fine. Every time she was on screen, I wanted to go back to The Defenders, which is unfortunate because this is Sigourney Weaver. The other Marvel shows on Netflix have done a wonderful job with the villains in the past, but I felt like this was one of their weaker ones. Without spoiling anything, the ending was a little predictable and it was a little messy. Other than that, this is another great hit from Netflix.

If you are a fan of the Netflix Marvel series, please check this out. It is guaranteed that you will have a blast if you go see it. While it most certainly isn’t as good as Daredevil, it is on par with the other shows; it’s way better than Iron Fist. I am totally down for a second season, and can’t wait to see how The Punisher goes.

'Wind River' Review

Image from The Playlist
By Diego Coya
Wind River is written and directed by Taylor Sheridan and stars Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Gil Birmingham, and Jon Bernthal. The film is about a murder of a young Native American girl that occurs on the West River American Native Reservation. The murder leads to an investigation that is led by a FBI rookie and a local tracker who tries to figure out what exactly happened. The viewer also learns more about these character’s lives and we see the awful environment that is on the reservation. Along the way we get a mystery that has twists and turns and a film that has much more under the surface.

Despite the fact that I practically knew nothing regarding the plot, I was still incredibly excited to see this film. The reason why is because Taylor Sheridan has proven himself to be an exceptional talent. He wrote both the screenplays for Sicario and Hell or High Water, both fantastic films. Now with him being behind the camera, I was intrigued to see how this film would play out. Walking out of the theater, I was absolutely blown away with what I had seen. Wind River is a powerful, emotional, and gripping thriller that had me entertained throughout its runtime.

The performances from everyone in the cast are top notch, but without question, the best performance is from Jeremy Renner. Without spoiling anything, there is something tragic that happens with his character that is revealed in the beginning of the film. Throughout the film you see how this investigation tries to bring some closure to his tragedy. Additionally, the viewer is able to see how Renner conveys the emotion on the screen. He’s also a very likeable character who brings great presence on the screen.

Elizabeth Olsen who plays a rookie FBI agent, also delivers a strong performance. She also brings likeability to her character, and she makes you want to root for her throughout the film. Gil Birmingham, who was in last year’s Hell or High Water, was also really good in his performance as the father of the young woman who was murdered. Everyone delivers a great performance, but once again, Jeremy Renner delivers the best performance.

The screenplay and direction is some of the best of the whole year; the dialogue is amazing and the cinematography was gorgeous. There are only a few action scenes in the film, but they are beautifully directed and really well done; it honestly felt like Sheridan has been directing for a really long time. It has a really good musical score that fits perfectly with the tone of the film and it makes the film suspense and tension filled. It’s hard to review this film without giving away spoilers but all I can say is that this is a truly film you need to see.

Wind River is a film that I truly hope receives some Oscar recognition because it truly deserves it. Wonderful direction, great performances, incredible direction, gorgeous cinematography, and a gripping thriller, makes it one of the best films of 2017. It is a hard film to watch due to how tough the subject matter is portrayed and some scenes are disturbing, but this is a film that must be seen. I seriously cannot wait to see what Sheridan does with Soldado next year. It should be terrific because Sheridan is a talent is only going to improve from this point on.

First trailer for Netflix series, 'The Punisher' brings back Jon Bernthal as the popular Marvel character

Image from CNET
By Darian Scalamoni
The Defenders just hit Netflix this past weekend and features the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist after their respective solo series. Now, after an often scene-stealing performance in Season 2 of Daredevil, Frank Castle aka The Punisher is getting his own show on the streaming service.

Jon Bernthal returns as the grizzled, brutal war veteran who is seeking out justice and killing bad people. We see Castle gunning down criminals and bashing a hammer into the concrete to mark the skull that is one of the most popular emblems in the Marvel Comics universe. I loved Bernthal’s portrayal of Castle in Daredevil and believe that this could possibly even overtake the former shows as the best Marvel television show to date.

Check out the first trailer for The Punisher below! The show stars Jon Bernthal, Ben Barnes. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Amber Rose Revah and Deborah Ann Woll. The show is created by Steve Lightfoot, who wrote the NBC series, Hannibal and will hit Netflix later this year.

First trailer for 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer' reveals the chilling new movie from Yorgos Lanthimos

Image from Live for Films
By Darian Scalamoni
Yorgos Lanthimos has become one of the more innovative and strange filmmakers we have working today. With his last film, The Lobster being his biggest mainstream hit, he’ll reunite with Colin Farrell for his latest, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and we have the trailer for you below.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer follows Farrell as a cardiologist who has a warped relationship with a young man that threatens his family, career and life. While The Lobster wasn’t quite my cup of tea, this trailer is chilling and looks to have some great moments of horror. The use of Ellie Goulding’s mega-popular song, “Burn” just adds to the creepiness and puts you at the edge of your seat.

Check out the trailer below for The Killing of a Sacred Deer! The movie stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan, Raffey Cassidy, Bill Camp, Sunny Suljic and Alicia Silverstone. The Killing of a Sacred Deer hits theaters on October 27th, just in time for Halloween.

Channing Tatum to take down a drug cartel in 'Bloodlines'

Image from US Weekly
By Darian Scalamoni
Channing Tatum can be seen starting today in theaters for Steven Soderbergh’s latest movie, Logan Lucky but he’s been incredibly busy for quite a bit of time now and is adding onto his list of projects. According to Deadline, Tatum will star in the crime drama, Bloodlines.

Based on the upcoming book by Melissa Del Bosque, Bloodlines: The True Story of a Drug Cartel, the FBI and the Battle for a Horse-Racing Dynasty, the movie will tell the story of a rookie FBI agent who works in Texas and stumbles upon a major money laundering operation which is run by a Mexican cartel. It sure sounds like an interesting project for Tatum and it’s also backed by an Oscar-nominated writer, Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton) who will write the script. Here’s hoping they get a great director as well, one that can make a Sicario or Hell or High Water-type genre movie.

In addition to Logan Lucky, Tatum will appear in Kingsman: The Golden Circle which hits theaters on September 22nd. He also has the Splash remake, the R-rated comedy/musical Wingmen with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gambit in development going forward.

How do you guys feel about Bloodlines and Tatum to star? Any ideas for who you would want to direct a movie like this? Let us know in the comments!

Netflix drama 'Ozark' renewed for Season 2

Image from Netflix
By Darian Scalamoni
One of the more popular new series of the Summer is the Netflix drama, Ozark starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Now, according to The Tracking Board, the show is being renewed for a second season that will consist of 10 episodes.

The show follows Bateman as a financial planner and family man who relocates his wife and children after a scheme to launder money goes wrong. Though I haven’t watched any of this series yet, it’s received plenty of positive reviews especially for Bateman’s performance.

Ozark joins GLOW, another new Netflix show that is one of my favorites that was renewed this week for a Season 2. Netflix has a very high renewal rate for most of their shows but have done their fair share of cancellations this year as well with The Get Down, Bloodline, Sense8, Girlboss and most recently, Gypsy.

How do you guys feel about Ozark’s renewal? Have you been watching and if so, what do you think about the Netflix original?

Tom Cruise breaks his ankle on set of 'Mission: Impossible 6', production set back three months

Image from Vulture
By Darian Scalamoni
We learned earlier in the week that Tom Cruise suffered an injury on the set of Mission: Impossible 6 and now we’re getting more information on exactly what will happen with the production going forward. Unfortunately, it’s not good news as the injury is serious enough that the movie will shut down for three months while the injury, which is being reported as either a broken foot or broken ankle.

The interesting development that also comes with this is that Henry Cavill may be able to shave the moustache that he grew out for the movie to film his reshoots for Justice League for Warner Bros. Unfortunately, for many of the other supporting actors, it will provide difficult decisions with other movies they have on their respective dockets. Paramount, the studio backing Mission: Impossible 6 will be facing the biggest issue as Cruise was set to shoot Top Gun: Maverick soon and was set for a July 2019 release date which may get pushed back.

Mission: Impossible 6 was originally set to hit theaters on July 27th, 2018 but that’s sure to move now, probably to a September or October release date. The film stars Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Henry Cavill, Michelle Monaghan, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Alec Baldwin, Angela Bassett and Ving Rhames.

All of us here at Cinema Wave wish Cruise a safe and speedy recovery!

Cate Blanchett joins Jack Black in Eli Roth's 'House with a Clock in Its Walls'

Image from Moviehole
By Darian Scalamoni
Cate Blanchett constantly is joining more ambitious projects year-by-year. Within the last five years, she’s worked with Woody Allen, Peter Jackson, George Clooney, Todd Haynes, Terrence Malick (twice!) and has a Marvel movie set for November. Now, she’s working with a surprising filmmaker for her next potential project. According to THR, Blanchett is set to join The House With a Clock in Its Walls directed by Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel).

The often eyebrow raising director is stepping away from his normal fare with his latest though as Blanchett and Jack Black will star in the movie based on the 1973 book of the same name from John Bellairs. The House With a Clock in Its Walls follows a young boy who discovers that his Uncle’s house is filled with secrets and they must locate a clock with the power to bring the end of the world. It sure sounds like a different project for Roth but I’m excited to see the finished product.

Blanchett will star in Thor: Ragnarok in November but also has more high-profile projects in her future. In 2018 alone, she’ll star in Richard Linklater’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette, voice Kaa in Andy Serkis’ live-action Jungle Book and star in Ocean’s Eight, the female-led spinoff of Ocean’s Eleven.

What do you guys think of Cate Blanchett starring in Eli Roth’s next film? Are you excited with the way The House With a Clock in Its Walls is coming together? Sound off in the comment section and let us know!

LeBron James to team up with Octavia Spencer for limited series, 'On Her Own Ground'

Image from TV Guide
By Darian Scalamoni
LeBron James, one of the NBA’s greatest players has already made a name for himself in Hollywood. With a scene-stealing role in Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck and him jumpstarting his production company, SpringHill Entertainment with a new scripted drama that will star an Oscar-winner. According to The Tracking Board, Octavia Spencer will star in a limited series based on the book, On Her Own Ground written by A’Lelia Bundles.

The show will follow Spencer as Madam C.J. Walker, a social activist who was born on a cotton plantation and became an orphan at the age of 7. She developed a scalp disorder which caused her to lose her hair in the late 1800s and decided to make home-made remedies to help with her condition. Later in 1905, Walker invented a line of African-American hair care products that made her one of the first woman billionaires ever. It sounds like a terrific project for Spencer to continue her incredible performances across all platforms. It definitely sounds like it could be a great first scripted show for James’ company as well.

Spencer starred in the Best Picture nominated film, Hidden Figures and will star in the upcoming Guillermo del Toro film, The Shape of Water. She’ll also star in the Ascendant TV series which is a follow-up to the Divergent film franchise in which she appeared as Johanna Reyes.

Brad Garrett to voice Eeyore in live-action Winnie the Pooh-based film, 'Christopher Robin'

Image from The Hollywood Reporter
By Darian Scalamoni
There are very few recognizable voices in Hollywood today that’re synonymous with the actor. One being Morgan Freeman, another being Sam Elliot and one that I usually associate is Brad Garrett. He’s using his voice for an iconic role as Tracking Board reports that Garrett will voice Eeyore in Disney’s Christopher Robin.

Christopher Robin is a live-action movie that will star Ewan McGregor as the titular character, grown up and lacking his imaginative gene that shined so much as a young boy. Winnie the Pooh and friends re-enter Robin’s life at just the right time to remind him what’s important in life and for his family. Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Quantum of Solace) will direct the family adventure film. Garrett has the perfect low tone that fits the character of Eeyore and with McGregor, Hayley Atwell and Jim Cummings voicing Winnie the Pooh, it seems like this movie is coming together quickly.

Garrett is best known for playing Robert Barone on the long-running sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond for which he won 3 Emmy Awards. He’s also done voice work as recently as 2016 in both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and Finding Dory. Christopher Robin is currently in pre-production and will begin shooting very soon!

What do you guys think about Brad Garrett being cast to voice Eeyore? Are you excited about Christopher Robin? Let us know in the comment section below!

New full-length trailer for 'Molly's Game' gives us a better look at a potential Oscar contender

Image from STFfilms
By Darian Scalamoni
Yesterday, the teaser for Molly’s Game was released and now, the full-length trailer can be seen below for a movie that I am HIGHLY anticipating. The movie, starring Jessica Chastain could be her ticket to an Academy Award and could see yet another writing Oscar for screenwriter (and now first-time director) Aaron Sorkin.

Chastain plays Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran an exclusive high-stakes poker game for over a decade before being arrested by FBI agents. The movie isn’t directly based on the book of the same name as we see Idris Elba’s character holding the book in the trailer. Yet, it seems he’s going for a less conventional approach with this adaptation by chronicling Bloom’s life, before, during and after the celebrity-driven poker games. I’m incredibly excited for this as Sorkin is my favorite screenwriter of all-time, mostly because his incredible work on The Newsroom, The West Wing and my favorite movie of all-time, The Social Network. He was actually set to direct that film if David Fincher passed and was given permission by the director to shoot a scene on the last day of production.

Check out the trailer below for Molly’s Game! The film stars Jessica Chastain, Kevin Costner, Idris Elba, Michael Cera, Jeremy Strong, Chris O’Dowd and Bill Camp. Molly’s Game hits theaters on November 22nd.

First trailer for 'The Meyerowitz Stories' showcases one of Cannes' finest dramas

Image from Teaser Trailer
By Darian Scalamoni
Ever since the Cannes Film Festival, there’s been plenty of talk about Noah Baumbach’s (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha) upcoming feature, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). Luckily, Netflix, it’s distributor has released the first trailer today that showcases its fantastic cast and family dysfunction that Baumbach is best known for.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is a family drama that stars Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Elizabeth Marvel as three adult siblings who are trying to direct their crazy lives along with their father, played by the magnificent, Dustin Hoffman. Though this acts much more like a teaser, rather than a trailer, it gives a glimpse at the dramedy that Baumbach has mastered over his career. It garnered tons of positive praise, especially for Sandler’s performance, at Cannes and it should be interesting what Netflix does regarding the Oscar season.

Check out the trailer below for The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)! The film stars Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Elizabeth Marvel, Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman. The Meyerowtiz Stories (New and Selected) hits Netflix and select theaters on October 13th.

Anya Taylor-Joy re-teams with 'The Witch' director Robert Eggers for 'Nosferatu'

Image from Zimbio
By Darian Scalamoni
The Witch, the Anya Taylor-Joy led horror film ended up on a ton of best of lists for 2016 when it comes to film. That haunting movie was directed by Robert Eggers and now the duo will reunite for his latest movie. They’ll remain in the horror genre too as Variety reports that Eggers will direct Taylor-Joy in his remake of Nosferatu.

Eggers’ movie will be the third version after the 1922 original and Werner Herzog’s 1979 movie starring Klaus Kinski. With this movie taking place in the 17th century, just as The Witch did, it should be a perfect project for the actor/director combo. Though I haven’t seen their first collaboration together, I believe the hype and think this could be an even better movie than their last.

Anya Taylor-Joy is one of the hottest young actresses working today and has two high-profile movies to shoot before she returns to working with Eggers. One of them being the sequel to M. Night Shyamalan’s Split which she starred in titled, Glass. She’ll also embark on her first foray with comic books as she’ll play Magik in X-Men: The New Mutants due out in 2018.

First teaser for 'Molly's Game' puts you at the poker table with Jessica Chastain

Image from Slashfilm
By Darian Scalamoni
Aaron Sorkin is one of maybe, at most, five screenwriters in the industry who is known by name recognition. He’s finally in the director’s chair for the first time in his career with the upcoming, Molly’s Game and though the full trailer comes out tomorrow, a teaser was released today which gives a first look at the film.

The movie centers around Jessica Chastain’s character, Molly Bloom in the true story of a successful female entrepreneur who runs a high-stakes international poker game for millions of dollars. She hits a bit of trouble though when she becomes a part of an FBI investigation due to her headlining the whole operation. I can’t wait to see the full-length trailer for this movie tomorrow as its third on my most-anticipated list for 2017. I’ll hold back my full thoughts until then but put this at the top of your list for the remainder of the year.

Check out the teaser below for Molly’s Game! The movie stars Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera, Brian d’Arcy James, Chris O’Dowd, Bill Camp, Graham Greene, Claire Rankin, Joe Keery and Jeremy Strong. Molly’s Game hits theaters everywhere on November 22nd

First trailer for 'The Florida Project' reveals Sean Baker's ambitious sophomore film

Image from Teaser Trailer
By Darian Scalamoni
Sean Baker had an ambitious low budget indie flick back in 2015 titled Tangerine that put him on the map. Filmed on iPhone 5s, the movie showcased his storytelling abilities and put him on the map for bigger projects going forward. His second feature, The Florida Project which debuted back in May at the Cannes Film Festival just received its first trailer and we have that for you here below!

The Florida Project tells the story of a six-year old girl named Moonee, who lives with her mother in a week to week motel run by an older man who’s committed to seeing the best for both of them. This is one of my favorite trailers of the year thus far, not only for the terrific realistic story but also the glorious cinematography and colors of the Miami landscape. It looks like it could be a truly moving film led by Willem Dafoe anchoring a cast of relative unknowns including breakout performances from Brooklynn Prince and Bria Vinaite.

Check out the trailer below for The Florida Project! The film stars Brooklynn Prince, Bria Vinaite, Willem Dafoe, Valeria Cotto, Christopher Rivera, Caleb Landry Jones, Macon Blair, Karen Karagulian and Sandy Kane. The Florida Project hits theaters on October 6th.

Shonda Rhimes leaving ABC after 15 years as she becomes the latest to join Netflix

Image from The Hollywood Reporter
By Darian Scalamoni
Netflix is constantly growing. Day by day, week by week acquiring companies like Millarworld, talents such as the Coen Brothers and Martin Scorsese but their latest power ploy could change the landscape of television. According to Collider and Ted Sarandos, the COO of Netflix, Shonda Rhimes is moving to Netflix after a 15-year long relationship with ABC Studios.

Rhimes is the creator of mega-popular series like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and Private Practice is heading to the streaming giant to produce content for years to come. Sarandos said in a statement today, “Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television. Her work is gripping, inventive, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, taboo-breaking television at its best. I’ve gotten the chance to know Shonda and she’s a true Netflixer at heart — she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience. We’re so excited to welcome her to Netflix.”

This is a remarkable leap forward not only for Shondaland but also Netflix, who convinced one of the top showrunners to leave a global market and company such as ABC. I also think this could be a shot at ABC’s parent company, Disney who just announced their own streaming service taking their movies and TV shows off of Netflix. This could help boost Netflix even more with the popularity of Rhimes’ shows and it should be interesting going forward the types of new programs that will head to streaming.

Image from MovieWeb
By Darian Scalamoni
Robert Redford is heading towards the last few films of his career before his retirement and he’s working with a familiar face for his next performance. Redford will co-star with Jane Fonda in Our Souls at Night, based on the novel of the same name by Kent Haruf and we have the first trailer for you below.

Our Souls at Night follows Redford as Louis Waters who’s been a widower for years and is visited by his neighbor, Addie Moore, played by Fonda whose husband passed away years ago. Waters and Moore’s children both moved away so they begin a relationship together which is teased below in the trailer and though this is simple, it’s rather effective and lovely. The movie is set to hit Netflix which both stars are no stranger to with Fonda starring in the series Grace and Frankie alongside Lily Tomlin while Redford starred in The Discovery which was released on the streaming service just a few months ago.

Check out the tranquil trailer for Our Souls at Night below! The movie stars Robert Redford, Matthias Schoenaerts, Bruce Dern and Judy Greer. Our Souls at Night hits Netflix on September 29th!

Riz Ahmed in talks to join Tom Hardy in 'Venom'

Image from Evening Standard
By Darian Scalamoni
With Sony building up their own Spider-Man universe that may or may not include Tom Holland’s Spider-Man (weird right?) they’re focusing their attention on Venom which will star Tom Hardy as the iconic comic book character. Now, the cast is being bolstered with another terrific talent. According to The Playlist, Riz Ahmed will join Venom as what is being called “a popular Marvel Comics character”.

Ahmed has been building quite the resume in the last few years starring in movies like Nightcrawler, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Jason Bourne. He’s also built a fantastic TV career since his starring role in the HBO limited series, The Night Of. There have been rumblings that Ahmed will play Carnage in the movie and I think that would be fantastic so here’s hoping that comes to fruition. Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) will direct Ahmed and Hardy in the superhero flick.

Aaron Eckhart joins the all-star cast of Matthew Weiner's Amazon series, 'The Romanoffs'

While Netflix continues to bring in new projects for both television and film, Amazon is not far behind with their content building as well. One of their awesome new shows being developed currently is The Romanoffs, the latest from Mad Men creator, Matthew Weiner. The cast is being built quickly with another big name being added to those who have already hopped on board. According to The Tracking Board, Aaron Eckhart has been added to the cast of the Amazon drama.

I believe that Eckhart is one of the most underrated actors in the industry and think that a collaboration between him and Weiner is a match made in heaven. I think he would’ve worked great on Mad Men as well so I think this is perfect casting. The Romanoffs will be an anthology series that centers around people in contemporary times who believe that they are modern day descendants of the royal family that ruled Russia from 1613-1917.

Eckhart has nothing in the pipeline for 2017 but had a pretty big 2016 starring in Sully, Incarnate, Bleed for This and London Has Fallen. Eckhart joins John Slattery, Christina Hendricks, Jack Huston, Amanda Peet, Mathe Keller and former Oscar-nominee, Isabelle Huppert in the Amazon series that should air in 2018.

David Letterman to get his own talk show on Netflix debuting in 2018

The legendary late-night talk show host David Letterman is returning to television…sort of. According to The Tracking Board, Letterman will have a new talk show series that will air on Netflix in 2018.

For anyone who was a fan of Letterman hosting the Late Show for 22 seasons, this is incredible news. I’m not a huge fan of Letterman but he’s reached an iconic status for his longevity and relevancy in late night television so this should do very well on the streaming giant. The show will feature longer in-depth interviews as well as work outside the studio to venture onto other topics that interest him in life. The show is currently set for six hour-long episodes.

This is the second weekly talk show that Netflix will house on their network next to Chelsea Handler’s show. This is yet another massive get for the streaming service who continues to acquire talented people to deals like Dave Chappelle, Louis CK and Jerry Seinfeld.

What do you guys think about David Letterman coming out of retirement for a deal with Netflix? Who would you like to see in these long-form interviews? Sound off in the comments!

Stephen Lang to return as villain for all four 'Avatar' sequels

We are still almost two and half years away from Avatar 2, the sequel to the highest grossing film of all-time directed by James Cameron. That’ll be a decade after the first movie but the train to Pandora isn’t stopping anytime soon as there are three more sequels besides Avatar 2 upcoming. We’re getting more news now as Cameron confirmed in an interview with Empire, that Stephen Lang will return for ALL of the sequels reprising his role as Colonel Miles Quaritch.

“The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters. There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherfucker through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park.”

It’s reassuring that we’ll see new settings and characters for the movies but I’m also glad that Lang will be returning as I thought he was brilliant in the original movie from 2009. I think this is such an ambitious thing for Cameron to do to have 4 more Avatar movies from 2020-2025 but as we’ve learned before, it’s hard to bet against the director of the two highest-grossing movies of all-time.

What do you guys think about hearing that Stephen Lang will return for all of the Avatar sequels? Do you even want to see more from Pandora? Let us know in the comment section!

First trailer for 'mother!' gives a glimpse at Darren Aronofsky's horror movie starring Jennifer Lawrence

It was announced about a year and half ago that Darren Aronofsky would be directing a horror movie with Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem starring and here we are today with the first trailer for said film. The movie is titled mother! and the preview for the movie can be seen below.

The trailer doesn’t give away much about the movie, but many are comparing the unnerving tone and look of the movie to another movie of this year, Get Out. I think that’s a bit unfair and not exactly accurate but as a fan of Aronofsky’s, I have to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of this trailer. It will hit theaters much sooner than I thought though with a September release date so we’ll have to see what this psychological mystery could provide for audiences.

Check out the first trailer below for mother! The movie stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfieffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson and Kristen Wiig. mother! hits theaters on September 15th!

Woody Allen casts Elle Fanning, Timothee Chalamet and Selena Gomez for his next film

Woody Allen just completed his upcoming movie, Wonder Wheel with Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake and he’s of course, just cast his next movie which will head to Amazon and theaters. According to Deadline, Elle Fanning, Timothee Chalamet and Selena Gomez will star in the untitled movie.

Currently, there are no details on the story but seeing these three 20-year old talented actors work alongside Woody Allen should be interesting to say the least. I’m expecting some sort of love triangle between the three. I’m very much looking forward to Wonder Wheel but getting back to this casting; Fanning and Chalamet are two of the hottest actors in the industry under 25.

Fanning was terrific in 20th Century Women last year and has already been seen in Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled in 2017. She also has How to Talk to Girls at Parties and Sidney Hall coming this year. Chalamet is getting tons of Oscar buzz for Call Me By Your Name alongside Armie Hammer. He’ll also be seen in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Scott Cooper’s Hostiles later this year. Gomez, is best known for her start on Disney Channel and for her music career but she’s also been involved in more serious dramas like Spring Breakers and The Fundamentals of Caring.

New trailer for 'Wonder' dives deeper into the adaptation of the best-selling novel

Jacob Tremblay has disappeared out of the spotlight since his awards campaign with Room. He’s since starred in a couple B-level horror movies and Colin Trevorrow’s disappointing film, The Book of Henry but his next big-time project, Wonder is hitting theaters later this year. We have yet another trailer for the adaptation of the best-selling novel from R.J. Palacio.

Wonder follows Auggie, a young boy who has multiple facial deformities from surgeries and heads to public school for the first time. Though his family has reservations about Auggie being in school at first, he makes new friends who help him truly understand what it means to be himself. This trailer is much better than the first in my opinion, truly encompassing what the novel is all about. Since the book is one of my favorites, I’m highly anticipating this movie. Stephen Chbosky has writing credits on some terrific movies like The Perks of Being a Wallflower (which was also his directorial debut) and the live-action Beauty and the Beast so for this being his second feature film he’s directing, it’s an interesting and exciting prospect.

Check out the new trailer below for Wonder! The movie stars Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, Daveed Diggs, Mandy Patinkin and Sonia Braga. Wonder hits theaters on November 17th
