Back in August, we reported that Antoine Fuqua was set to direct a reimagining of the classic Scarface for 2018, unfortunately, scheduling conflicts with The Equalizer 2 starring his muse, Denzel Washington has forced him to drop out of the project according to Variety. This comes right at the same time as the outlet reporting that the film has found their star in Diego Luna.
Universal wants to get the project moving along quickly so following the departure of Fuqua, they’ve ramped up efforts and meetings with other directors to helm the remake. The 1932 and 1983 versions of the film focused on a Cuban drug lord in Miami but this incarnation is set to take place in Los Angeles and focus on a Mexican immigrant that rises to power. Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street, Boardwalk Empire) wrote the recent draft for the movie.
Luna might look familiar as he was one of the stars of the recent Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in which he played Cassian Andor. Luna will be seen next in the horror/sci-fi remake of Flatliners which will star himself, Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, Kiersey Clemons and one of the original stars of the 1990 original, Kiefer Sutherland.
