First Trailer for 'Wonka' Features Timothee Chalemet in the Origin Story of a Chocolatier while Hugh Grant Dances Around as an Oompa-Loompa

by Darian Scalamoni
When it was first announced that there was going to be a musical origin story for Willy Wonka, now famously played by both Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, many wondered if it was necessary. It wasn't until Timothee Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name, Dune) signed on to play the famous fictional chocolatier and Paul King of Paddington fame came in to direct that the tide changed a bit. Now, you get to see for yourself as the first trailer has dropped for Wonka.

Wonka plays as a musical adventure with the eccentric young candy maker using his expeditions and experiments to help inspire him to create his grand, fantastical factory in the future. Chalamet seems to be doing fine in the role, but the big reveal is saved for end of the trailer when we see Hugh Grant (Love Actually, About a Boy) portraying an Oompa-Loompa.

John Talbot composes the score and musical sequences for the film after previously working on the animated musical franchise, Sing. King also co-wrote the script alongside Simon Farnaby (Paddington 2, Ghosts). The vivid family film will adapt the 1964 prequel novel from Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Check out the trailer below for Wonka that stars Chalamet, Grant, Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Matt Lucas and Natasha Rothwell. Wonka releases everywhere in theaters on December 15.
