James Gunn Begins to Round Out 'Superman: Legacy' Cast as Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced & Edi Gathegi as Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl & Mister Terrific
Multiple outlets are reporting that Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly), Isabela Merced (Transformers: The Last Knight, Instant Family) and Edi Gathegi (StartUp, The Harder They Fall) will join the cast of Superman: Legacy which hits theaters on July 11, 2025. Fillion is set to play Guy Gardner, a member of the Green Lantern Corps, Merced will embody Hawkgirl, while Gathegi is Gunn's choice to play Mister Terrific, who was teased on the filmmaker's Twitter account back in November.
Superman: Legacy has been the most talked about upcoming DCU project as its set to completely reshape the nature of DC Studios under the guise of Gunn and co-president Peter Safran. Gunn will write and direct the film drawing from DC characters that were created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Though this will be Gunn's first time working with Merced and Gathegi, Fillion has been a frequent collaborator of Gunn's. Fillion appeared as three different characters throughout the Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel, while also appearing in The Suicide Squad as T.D.K. He's currently the lead in the ABC police procedural The Rookie and will next appear in Skincare alongside Elizabeth Banks.
Merced is a young star on the rise who is not unaware of the responsibility of major roles in franchises. She had a lead role in 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight before assuming the role of Dora the Explorer in the live-action Dora and the Lost City of Gold a couple of years later. Since then, she's appeared in films such as Rosaline, Father of the Bride and Sweet Girl but has tons of major projects upcoming as well. She'll next appear Sony's Marvel project Madame Web which boasts a cast that also includes Sydney Sweeney, Dakota Johnson, Adam Scott and Tahar Rahim. Additionally, we reported back in March that Merced will star in Alien: Romulus, the latest in the horror franchise directed by Fede Alvarez.
Gathegi has also appeared in a superhero property before in X-Men: First Class where he played Darwin. He is currently starring in AppleTV+ sci-fi drama For All Mankind and recently starred in Jeymes Samuel's The Harder They Fall. He'll next appear in Netflix series Zero Day opposite Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Connie Britton and Lizzy Caplan.
