'Minecraft' Film Begins Filming with All-Star Cast that includes Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks & Jennifer Coolidge
Tons of actors have been in talks over the years to lead Minecraft including Steve Carell and Pedro Pascal, but Momoa is set to be the unknown lead now. He is coming off his last stint as Aquaman in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom for DC, but his most standout role of 2023 was his charismatic and villainous turn as Dante in Fast X. His new reality series, On the Roam releases this month on Max and in addition to that, he's been hot in rumors for months now that he will have a new role in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU as Lobo. Momoa is currently also filming his second series for AppleTV+ in Chief of War. Momoa is also amongst a stacked ensemble for crime drama, Hand of Dante with Gal Gadot, Al Pacino and Oscar Isaac.
Coolidge is coming off her second Emmy win for the HBO anthology series, The White Lotus. Across both seasons of Mike White's dramedy show, Coolidge played Tanya McQuoid. That role has catapulted her back into the spotlight of Hollywood, also earning her a lead role in Ryan Murphy's popular Netflix show, The Watcher. She is currently filming the comedy movie, Riff Raff.
While Momoa and Coolidge's roles are under wraps, we know that Jack Black and Danielle Brooks will be playing Steve and Dawn respectively. Black is coming off his voice role as Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. He also entered the Star Wars universe with the role as Captain Bombardier in The Mandalorian. He will reprise another major voice role in 2024, returning as Po in Kung Fu Panda 4. Brooks, on the other hand, may be on the precipice of her first Oscar nomination for her work in 2023's The Color Purple. Brooks also is known for her roles on streaming series such as DC's Peacemaker and Netflix's Orange is the New Black.
