Guillermo del Toro has been one of the most talked about filmmakers over the last year as many speculated how he would follow-up his Oscar-winning movie, The Shape of Water and now, we have the answer. According to The HollywoodReporter, del Toro will write, produce and direct his long-gestating, stop-motion feature version of Pinocchio.

The project has been in development for years under del Toro and Netflix has decided that they’re going to give him the money to make the dream come true. “No artform has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio,” said del Toro in a statement. “In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”

It’s so obvious that this has been a massive desire for del Toro to get Pinocchio off the ground and now that his vision is coming to life, he is excited about it. Adventure Time writer, Patrick McHale will co-write the script while Mark Gustafson will co-direct. This will be the director’s second collaboration with the streaming service as his animated series, Trollhunters is broadcast on Netflix.

I’m incredibly excited to see how this turns out as you can see how passionate del Toro is to tell this story. The fact that it’s stop-motion is also super interesting so now all we can do is wait to hear about casting! Years ago, when the film was in early development, Robert Downey Jr. was on board to star as Geppetto, so I wonder if he’ll return as the father of the puppet-turned-real boy.

No release date has been set yet for Pinocchio but production is expected to begin this Fall.
