When Detective Pikachu was first announced, it was on the heels of the worldwide phenomenon at the time, Pokemon Go, a mobile game where you would capture Pokemon in your real-world surroundings. Warner Bros. then announced a live-action movie following Pikachu, one of the most popular little monsters in the Pokemon universe as a detective helping a young man named Tim discover the whereabouts of his father after he disappears.

Based on the synopsis, one would think this would not work but low and behold, the film was made, and we’ve received the first trailer today. Pikachu is voiced by Ryan Reynolds, which sounds bizarre at first but after a few watches, you realize that it fits perfectly. Tim is played by Justice Smith, who starred as Ezekial ‘Books’ Figuero in the Netflix series, The Get Down and appeared in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom as Franklin Webb. Tim is the only person who can understand what Pikachu is saying which leads to laughs and an even more interesting adventure than he intended to embark on.

The CGI Pokemon look absolutely incredible and make the movie seem even weirder, but I think it could be a win for Warner Bros. overall. I’m excited to see the film and will definitely be there opening weekend. Detective Pikachu stars Reynolds, Smith, Kathryn Newton, Ken Watanabe, Bill Nighy and Suki Waterhouse. The film hits theaters on May 10th, 2019; check out the trailer below!
