If you’re a fan of HBO’s True Detective or the new Netflix limited series, Maniac, you’re most likely excited for anything that Cary Fukunaga has on his upcoming slate. According to Deadline, he’ll add to his crowded lineup as Fukunaga will team with David Lowery, who recently directed The Old Man & the Gun for a pilot script based on the 1985 sci-fi flick, Explorers.

The original film which stared Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix is about a boy who is obsessed with 50s alien movies who has a recurring dream about a mysterious blueprint. He bands together with two friends to build a spaceship, which will serve as the starting point for the show. The series is being written for Paramount Television so if it’s picked up than it’s expected to air on Paramount Network. Paramount took over the formerly known, SpikeTV and rebranded to Paramount Network with original series, Yellowstone, American Woman, Heathers and the miniseries, Waco.

Though I’ve never seen Explorers, I think this sounds like it could be Paramount’s version of Stranger Things which could benefit the brand tremendously. With names like Fukunaga and Lowery attached as well, it could lead to a tremendous mixture of talent to bring this together.
