Emilia Jones, Milly Alcock & Meg Donnelly Emerge as Frontrunners for 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' as Screen Tests Begin for DCU Hero

With 2024 brings many exciting opportunities for new emerging filmmakers to make their name for themselves as well as seeing new young actors step into the spandex for the first time to appear across the multitude of comic book worlds that have been established across film and television. One of the big worlds to be explored in 2024 is the official beginning of the newly formed DCU from Peter Safran and James Gunn, who made waves across 2023 for their announcements of projects and castings for such things as Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy. However, now we may be getting closer to the casting of Supergirl herself.

According to Deadline's Anthony D'Alessandro, it appears that three actresses are in the mix for the role of Supergirl in the film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. DC Studios is looking to begin screen tests as early as next week with Emilia Jones (CODA), Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) and Meg Donnelly (Zombies). The final decision is not expected to be made quickly as Gunn and Safran plan to take their time, with a verdict likely coming at the end of January. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is still seeking out a director, however, we reported back in November that Ana Nogueira will pen the screenplay for Warner Bros.

All three actresses up for the role are inspired choices, with my current favorite for the role being the breakout star, Milly Alcock. Alcock came into the public eye with her performance as the younger version of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon. The major success that came from that has mostly dissipated due to the series going away and nothing else being lined up for the brilliant young actress. I believe this would be the perfect leading role for her to establish herself on the big screen moving forward.

Emilia Jones, however, I would have to believe has an inside track on the role, despite being naturally a brunette. Jones broke out in last year's Best Picture winner, CODA, starring as Ruby Rossi, the lead in the film alongside Troy Kotsur, Marlee Matlin, Eugenio Derbez and Daniel Durant. She also led her own TV series, Locke & Key on Netflix and has great projects lined up in the near future with the feature film, Winner and the next HBO series from Brad Inglesby (creator of Mare of Easttown) opposite Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey and Alison Oliver. Having a role in a Warner-owned, HBO production might also help establish that connection similar to Alcock with House of the Dragon.

Meg Donnelly, though definitively the most unknown of the three actresses up for the role, has an association with the role of Supergirl, having voiced the hero in DC animated movies, Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths. Donnelly is best known for playing Addison in the Disney Channel franchise Zombies, and recently lead the short-lived Supernatural spin-off series, The Winchesters.
