James Gunn Sets Cast for Animated Series 'Creature Commandos' Led by David Harbour, Frank Grillo, Indira Varma + More
The entertainment outlet has reported that the voice cast for the series has been set with Frank Grillo (The Grey) as Rick Flag Sr., David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Eric Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Dr. Phosphoros, Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Film) as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma (Game of Thrones) as The Bride, Zoe Chao (Love Life) as Nina Mazursky and Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) as both Weasel and G.I. Robot. Additionally, Viola Davis (Widows) and Steve Agee (Peacemaker) will reprise their live-action characters, Amanda Waller and Steve Economos respectively for the animated series. Within the series, the team of mutants, aliens, creatures and such will be under the eye of Amanda Waller.
One of the aspects of the new DCU that Gunn had spoken on during his presentation was that characters that appear in animation will be voiced by the same actors that will eventually play them in live-action, so let the speculation begin as to when we'll see some of these actors bring these characters to life on-screen. Think of the Creature Commandos as DC's answer to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, a tactical team of misfits who will handle the most otherworldly missions possible.
With the cast already being announced, expect this series to release either at the end of 2023 or in early-2024. Grillo most recently starred in Remy Grillo's indie film The Resurrection of Charles Manson and two episodes of Peacock breakout series, Paul T. Goldman. Harbour is set to appear next in Gran Turismo and Marvel's Thunderbolts reprising his role as Red Guardian. He most recently starred in Netflix film, We Have a Ghost. Tudyk will appear next in Disney+ movie Peter Pan & Wendy, while Bakalova will voice Cosmo the Space-Dog in Gunn's final Marvel project, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Varma is best known for playing Ellaria Sand on Game of Thrones and Niobe on Rome. She most recently starred as Tala Durith in Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
