HBO
tends to keep things as in-house and close to the vest as possible. They like
bringing in talent that they’ve worked with before and attaching them to other
projects. It appears they’re doing that again with their upcoming limited
series, The Dolls. According to Deadline, Issa Rae and Laura Dern will
be starring in the show with Rae also attached to write and executive produce.
The Dolls is inspired by true events and
recounts the aftermath of riots on Christmas Eve within two small towns in
Arkansas in 1983 over Cabbage Patch Dolls. The series is set to explore class, race,
privilege and what it takes to be deemed, “a good mother.” This show sounds
bonkers but I’m super intrigued especially with Rae attached. Dern is also on a
massive hot streak over the last couple of years so seeing these two share the
screen should be a real treat.
Rae recently
received an Emmy nomination for her role in Insecure
which also airs on HBO and she created. She made her film debut recently in The Hate U Give and will be seen next in
the comedy, Little alongside Regina
Hall and This Is Us’ Justin Hartley.
Dern
is one of the busiest working actresses today. She’s worked with HBO before for
the drama, Big Little Lies for what
she won an Emmy and Golden Globe for her role as Renata, as well as starring in
The Tale, a feature film for the network.
She recently wrapped the second season of Big Little Lies and will next star in
Greta Gerwig’s follow-up to Lady Bird,
a remake of Little Women.
