According to Variety, it appears that Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson, who won the Best Actress award this year for her performance in Room, is the frontrunner to play one of Marvel’s most popular female heroes. Larson is in talks to play Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Though it is unknown at this time where negotiations stand, it is said that Larson is the Marvel Studios first choice for the part and she is leaning towards taking it.

No director has signed on for this project yet but it seems that Marvel would like to hire a female to helm the project. Early favorites for the director’s chair are Niki Caro (Whale Rider, McFarland USA) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook). Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman who previously wrote Pixar hit, Inside Out, are writing the film.

The movie will follow Carol Danvers, an air force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the super powers of strength, energy and flight. Brie Larson has other big time projects currently in the works including the big budget, Kong: Skull Island due out next year along with The Glass Castle, which she is currently filming. Larson will be seen next in the film, Free Fire alongside Armie Hammer and Cillian Murphy.

Captain Marvel is due to be released in theaters on March 8th, 2019.
