Amy Adams, Paul Rudd & Tessa Thompson catch 'The Invite' for the upcoming Sex Comedy Film
by Darian Scalamoni
It feels like it's been a while since we've had a good comedy in theaters. Hopefully the tide will change with this upcoming project that's been announced over at Deadline. Paul Rudd (Ant-Man, I Love You, Man), Amy Adams (Arrival, Enchanted) and Tessa Thompson (Creed, Thor: Ragnarok) will star together in The Invite, which is being described as a "sex comedy." The film is based on the 2020 Spanish film, Sentimental and will be penned by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (Toy Story 4, Celeste & Jesse Forever). The directing duo of Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton (Little Miss Sunshine, Battle of the Sexes) will direct.
The Invite follows Adams and Rudd as Angela and Joe, a married couple that doesn't have the same spark as they used to following 15 years of marriage. In an effort to engage with a younger couple in conversation to snap them out of their funk, the two of them invite over their neighbors Kayla (Thompson) and her husband, Shane for drinks. That's when there is seemingly an unexpected turn of events: Kayla and Shane host weekly orgies in the neighborhood and want to see if Joe and Angela would like to join.
It sounds like a hilarious plot and with comedic directors and talent attached, it might just be the perfect recipe for laughs in the theater. Faris & Dayton will re-team with Rudd for the film, previously directing him in the Netflix series, Living with Yourself. Most recently, they helmed the Hulu limited series Fleischman is in Trouble.
Rudd most recently reprised his hero role of Scott Lang aka Ant-Man in Quantumania. Next, he'll return to another franchise with the sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife. He's also joining the cast of Only Murders in the Building for its upcoming third season on Hulu.
Adams will next star in Marielle Heller's Night Bitch before starring in Adam McKay's next project, Average Height, Average Build. The six-time Oscar nominee also returned to her role as Giselle in the Disney+ exclusive, Disenchanted.
Meanwhile, Thompson most recently appeared in Creed III. She also has a number of projects set up at HBO including The Secret Lives of Church Ladies, as well as Who Fears Death.
