What to Watch This Week: June 5th-June 10th

by Darian Scalamoni
After a hiatus, we are BACK with What to Watch This Week! There are so many interesting things to watch in the theater, on television and on streaming and with June just kicking off, what a way to bring in the summer then watching content!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
I have a ton of thoughts about this film. Revelatory, incredible visual animation with an emotional story that somehow completely outdoes the events of Into the Spider-Verse. I don't want to get too spoiler-heavy, and we'll have a lot of content on the site and on our YouTube channel about the film this week. Just please trust me on this and go see this film. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently playing in theaters everywhere.

Arnold
Arnold Schwarzenegger has been in the news recently due to his streaming debut for Netflix series FUBAR, however, the streamer will debut its comprehensive 3-part docuseries on the life of the bodybuilder turned Hollywood phenomenon turned California Governor. The Austrian has had quite the life and career and this Netflix series aims to chronicle the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Arnold begins streaming on Netflix this Wednesday, June 7.

The Idol
Sam Levinson, the creator of HBO's raunchy smash hit, Euphoria, as brought yet another show to the network that might push the envelope even further than the aforementioned drama. The Idol follows Lily-Rose Depp, an up-and-coming pop sensation whose life is constantly in the spotlight and has many "handlers" controlling her stardom. However, when she meets Tedros (Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye), a night club owner who she falls for, her whole entire world changes. We just watched the first episode of this series and are releasing our thoughts on the premiere later this week on our YouTube channel. The Idol just premiered this past Sunday and will continue to air its first season on HBO, every Sunday at 9 PM EST.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
After a hiatus from the Michael Bay-curated franchise, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is supposed to take place within the same cinematic universe as Bumblebee, a separate film that takes place decades before Bay's led tentpole series. Rise of the Beasts takes place in the 1990s and features Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback as our new leads with Pete Davidson, Peter Dinklage and recent Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh voicing some of the new Autobots. This time around, the Transformers will face off against the Maximals. Rise of the Beasts releases in theaters this Friday, June 9.

Based on a True Story
The latest series from Peacock is a comedy series starring Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a married couple who tries to take advantage of America's obsession of true crime by trying to solve a potential murder case in their town themselves. With NBCUniversal's streamer having a big year thus far, Based on a True Story has potential to be Peacock's next big hit. The series begins streaming this Thursday, June 8 on Peacock.

I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson
Arguably the best sketch comedy series on TV/Streaming right now has to be I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson. The SNL alum thinks of these completely outlandish but utterly hilarious scenarios with guest stars galore (Tim Meadows, Sam Richardson, Will Forte, Jason Schwartzman, etc.) However, we need MORE when it comes to this show as it only releases 6 episodes a season, with only a little over fifteen minutes of sketches per episode. The third season of I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson is available to stream currently on Netflix.

The Crowded Room
Tom Holland stars in his first streaming series taking a much different approach than his work as a web-slinger for Sony and Marvel. Holland stars as Danny Sullivan, in Apple's adaptation of a psychological thriller novel in which Sullivan is arrested for his role in a shooting in Manhattan in 1979. Among the starry cast is also recent Emmy-winner Amanda Seyfried as the investigator aiming to solve the crime, Emmy Rossum as Sullivan's mother as well as Sasha Lane and Christopher Abbott. The Crowded Room begins streaming this Friday, June 9 on AppleTV+.
