It’s been a while since we’ve seen Eddie Murphy on screen, let alone in a dramatic role. Murphy was last seen in the family/comedy disaster, A Thousand Words back in 2012 but with this new film, Mr. Church, Murphy is taking a similar approach like he did with 2006’s Dreamgirls. The legendary comedian played a very dark character in Bill Condon’s musical drama and played it incredibly well. So much so, that he received the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, while also garnering an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of James ‘Thunder’ Early.

Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Breaker Morant) directs the film which centers around a humble cook, who is hired to care for a woman dying of cancer. He then becomes much more involved than he ever could’ve imagined, which includes being a much bigger part of a young girl’s life (Britt Robertson).

I love the trailer for this film and how it truly portrays what seems to be a true friendship on screen with Murphy and Robertson. Mr. Church opens in theaters on September 16th. Check out the trailer below!
