Denzel Washington hasn’t been in the spotlight in quite some time. He wasn’t even on screen at all last year and has only released 4 films over the last 5 years. Part of that might be because he was on Broadway doing a play titled Fences which was originally written by August Wilson. Denzel not only did it on Broadway but he is starring in an on screen adaptation alongside Viola Davis.

Today, Paramount gave a first look at the feature film that also is directed by the Oscar-winning actor. Fences takes place in the 1950s and revolves around an African-American former baseball star who now works as a trash collector, crossing the race barrier to serve as a driver, not just a garbage man. The original stage play won the Tony Award and Washington and Davis will reprise their roles after starring in the revival back in 2010.

This film will be the third directed by Washington after 2002’s Antwone Fisher and 2007’s The Great Debaters. Check out the first image of Denzel and Davis at the top of the post. Fences will be released on December 25th.
