Netflix is still angling to have more of a presence within the awards circuit and have attracted a former Oscar winner for one of their latest films, The Pale Blue Eye which released its first trailer today. The film directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace) adapts the Louis Bayard novel of the same name that acts as an origin story for the famous author Edgar Allan Poe.

The Pale Blue Eye follows Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, The Fighter) as a local detective who's investigating the murder of a cadet at West Point in the 1830s. It's at the fledgling military academy where Bale's character meets Poe, played by Harry Melling (The Queen's Gambit, Harry Potter franchise), an eccentric and curious penchant for poetry who despises the university he's currently enrolled in. The film is some true gothic horror elements that are comparable to some of Poe's actual literary works. Additionally, the film boasts a terrific cast that also includes Gillian Anderson (Sex Education, The X-Files) and Robert Duvall (The Apostle, The Godfather). This also marks the third time Bale has worked with Cooper as they previously teamed together for Hostiles and Out of the Furnace.
