Matt Damon was supposed to have a huge hit on his hands this year with his return to the Bourne series in Jason Bourne but due to lackluster reviews and story, the film didn’t live up to expectations. Damon is going for a different approach in his next role which sees him fighting alongside many Chinese soldiers in The Great Wall.

The fictional tale is set in 15th century China and tells of what the Chinese really were trying to keep out with the iconic Great Wall of China. It seems to be creatures of some sort and the overall look of the movie screams blockbuster. I have to say that the premise seems silly, honestly. Though I’m happy that the cast is largely of Chinese descent (which it should be anyway), the plot just seems too fantastical for my taste. The effects seem cool but overall, this is a film I will most likely not be seeing in the theaters.

In addition to Damon, the cast also includes Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Lu Han and Andy Lau. The director, Zhang Yimou has directed over 20 Chinese language films and even the Beijing Olympics so this project seems to be in the right hands. The Great Wall opens everywhere on February 17th, 2017. Check out the first trailer below!
