Sci-Fi juggernaut director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, Lucy) will bring the weird next summer with his upcoming blockbuster Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The upcoming movie is based on the graphic novel series and has an eclectic cast, much like Besson had for The Fifth Element.

The official synopsis is as follows: Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner-blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Seems interesting enough but DeHaan and Delevingne also embark on a mission that can change their galaxy forever thanks to their commander. I’m excited for this film for many reasons but you can’t shy away from the ensemble Besson has assembled for it. Along with DeHaan and Delevingne, they’re joined by Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Rihanna and Herbie Hancock. While the last two are suspect for their acting chops, it’ll be interesting to see how they fare with material from one of the best sci-fi directors.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opens in theaters on July 21st, 2017. Check out new images just underneath the headline as well as some below.
