Brendan Fraser Looks Towards Awards Contention with the First Trailer for Darren Aronofsky's 'The Whale'

by Darian Scalamoni
As we approach awards season for film and television, we're bound to see actors enter the fray looking to have their name be among those who get recognized for their craft. One such actor who has been garnering attention for their latest performance is Brendan Fraser. The actor is set to lead a dramatic film called The Whale which just released its first trailer today.

The Whale stars Fraser (The Mummy, Crash) as Charlie, an obese reclusive English teacher who is attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter. Stranger Things' Sadie Sink plays his daughter, Ellie, in the film which is directed by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream). Aronofsky is best known for some deep character studies in films like the aforementioned Black Swan as well as The Wrestler, which acted as a comeback of sorts for actor Mickey Rourke. It appears lightning might strike twice as Fraser, who was best known for roles in 1990s films such as The Mummy and George of the Jungle. The actor is garnering tons of acclaim for his emotional performance in the film which is adapted from a stage play of the same name and takes place all within one room, for the most part.

The film started gaining critical attention after its ecstatic debut at the Venice Film Festival with critics pointing to the performances as stand outs. You can view the trailer for A24's The Whale below! The film stars Fraser, Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins and Samantha Morton. The Whale is currently in some cinemas but will expand worldwide on December 21st.
