Louis CK did the
unthinkable when he decided instead of continuing on with his successful
dramedy series, Louie on FX but he
has made even more waves for his new series titled simply, Horace and Pete. You’re probably asking yourself why you haven’t
heard of the series, I mean after all, the show does star Louis CK, Steve
Buscemi, Edie Falco, Jessica Lange and Alan Alda. So why isn’t a show with such
a high profile cast being talked about more? The reason being is that Louie
decided not to market the show at all. He dropped the first episode of the web
series on his website, Louisck.net on
January 30th at $5.
The web series
follows two brothers Horace (Louis CK) and Pete (Steve Buscemi) who run a bar
together that has been around in Brooklyn for one hundred years. The bar has
always been run by two members of the family whether it be brothers or cousins
but their names have been Horace and Pete. The series acts as if it is a play
as every episode has an intermission along with two settings throughout the
entire series. Don’t let that turn you off though if you’re more of a normal television
watcher, because this series is filled with laughs and an interesting format
that only Louis CK can do justice. The casting is fantastic as CK surrounds
himself with heavy hitting Emmy winners like Buscemi, Falco and Lange, though
it might be another Emmy winner, Alan Alda who truly steals the show as Uncle
Pete. His dry and bitter tone throughout makes you laugh at the old man as he
suffers through more days as a bartender in a hundred year old bar.
The show is not
all laughs though as it touches upon serious issues such as mental illness,
adultery and cancer as the main characters navigate through their messed up
pasts to try to bring positive light to their future. The show also is very
current as the scripts are filled with current events such as the presidential
race and transgender debates as ensemble characters fill the bar benches with
laughs, tears and real issues.
The whole series
costs $31 in total which might seem like a lot for you Netflix watchers but I
guarantee if you’re looking for an authentic, original and different kind of
web series, Horace and Pete is
something that will fulfill that need.
