Jaafar Jackson, Michael's Nephew, to Play his Uncle and Pop Icon in 'Michael' for Antoine Fuqua

by Darian Scalamoni
We reported on the news that Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Emancipation) would be directing the upcoming biopic about the life of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, earlier this month. Now, just 12 days after our report, Deadline is reporting that Jaafar Jackson, Michael's nephew, will portray him in the biographical film for Lionsgate.

Jaafar Jackson, who is the son of Jermaine Jackson, has been singing and dancing since the age of 12, showcasing his talents by singing the tunes of Motown Legends such as Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye along with the classics brought forth by his family. Jackson is a professional singer and songwriter who also can dance like his late uncle; however, he has no professional acting experience. Though many may shudder at the fact that the Jackson estate is keeping this "in the family" for Michael, we previously reported that John Logan's script does not shy away from all the controversies that have surrounded the life of Michael Jackson despite his musical talents and triumphs. Though Jaafar may be learning the extent of his uncle's alleged crimes throughout the research and development of the role, it appears he is up to the challenge of portraying him on screen.

Fuqua is currently finishing up production on The Equalizer 3 with Denzel Washington. After that, Michael is scheduled to shoot later this year. Graham King, best known for his Oscar-nominated Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody will also produce the film. The Jackson estate has granted Lionsgate the music rights for the movie that will most likely release at the end of 2024.
