Yesterday, I wrote an article detailing why Ben Affleck leaving The Batman means that the DCEU is in disarray. Also, The Flash is essentially starting over with the script which means more trouble for Warner Bros. One DC film that seems to be moving along with no problems is Aquaman. The film that will be directed by James Wan (Furious 7, The Conjuring) now has added even more cast members to its growing ensemble, as Collider reports that Nicole Kidman and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II have joined the underwater comic book adventure.

Kidman, who was Wan’s top choice for her role, will play Aquaman’s mother, though it’s unclear which iteration of the character will be on screen. Abdul-Mateen II, who is best known for the Netflix original series, The Get Down will play the antagonist of the film, Black Manta. The origins of his character go back to issue 35 in 1967, to which you’ll learn about his beginnings of a Baltimore boy was kidnapped, held aboard a ship and abused by his captors before being unintentionally ignored by Aquaman leading to the bad blood between the two. As for Kidman’s character of Queen Atlanna, in the comics, she was close to dying after birthing the titular character of Aquaman so we might see her demise early in this universe.

Kidman and Abdul-Mateen II join Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe and Patrick Wilson who have all been confirmed for the movie. The film will begin shooting soon and we’ll continue to update you on the status and more castings updates for the superhero flick. Aquaman is set to hit theaters on October 5th, 2018!
