James Gunn Officially Set to Direct 'Superman: Legacy'

by Darian Scalamoni
After months of speculation, the day has finally come. It's official: Superman is back and James Gunn is at the helm. That's right, the new head of DC, who so far, is VERY involved not only behind the scenes but working on set as Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad) is now aboard to not only write but also direct Superman: Legacy.

The announcement shouldn't be that much of a surprise as Gunn usually directs the projects he writes and Superman: Legacy is expected to be a major kickstart for the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters that we reported to you guys back in January. We also know that Henry Cavill will not be returning as the Man of Steel, but as for the choice to play Clark Kent, it's been all crickets thus far.

Superman: Legacy will tell the story of Superman's journey to accommodate his Kryptonian heritage along with his upbringing as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas. Gunn has already said on social media that is take will be strongly influenced by the All-Star Superman run from DC Comics with his version of the legendary comic book character being younger than his forties.

The superhero adventure film will fly into theaters on July 11, 2025, and is the first title in a slate of films that will push forward for the new vision for the DC Studios newly coined on-screen cinematic universe, the DCU. The Batman Part II, the second installment in Matt Reeves cinematic BatVerse will hit theaters shortly after on October 3, 2025.

Gunn's final Marvel commitment in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters in May, while he's already made his DCU debut via film and television. He first came over to direct The Suicide Squad, a quasi-reimagining of the ragtag group of convicts who become a task force for Amanda Waller. Then, he followed that up with a sequel series revolving around John Cena's character, Peacemaker which was a massive hit for HBO Max. Before directing Superman: Legacy, Gunn will also write and showrun the animated HBO Max series, Creature Commandos for DC as well.
