Netflix
has been building juggernaut status for years now but now it seems they’re getting
a bit Presidential. According to Deadline, former President Barack Obama and former
First Lady Michelle Obama have signed a multi-year agreement to produce films
and series for the streaming service. Netflix announced this over Twitter and
have said that the deal could “potentially include producing scripted series,
unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features.”
It
was reported back in March that Netflix was eyeing bringing in the Obamas to
produce content and now the deal is officially done. I think this is a great
move for Netflix. Bringing in the Obamas, who already have a very strong social
media presence, could bring a freshness to the service with their productions.
The
report also states that they will be using the platform to focus on
inspirational stories. “President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the
power of storytelling to inspire,” Eric Schultz, a senior adviser to the former
president, was quoted by the Times. “Throughout their lives, they have lifted
up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing
the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they
continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.”
