fell in love with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn character so much in “Suicide
Squad” that they were more excited for the spinoff movies that Warner Bros. had
planned after the antihero ensemble film. The DC Comics lineup has changed
dramatically since its beginning but after Harley’s popularity skyrocketed, the
studio has made her a priority going forward. With multiple projects in
development, there’s finally headway on one movie, the “Birds of Prey” film
that will be produced by Robbie and be directed by “Dead Pigs” director, Cathy
Yan.
In an
interview with Collider, Robbie talked about her ambitions for the movie that
she’s been developing since she was filming “Suicide Squad” back in 2015. “I
pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was
like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t
ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it
should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially
in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.” Robbie also sought
out a female director which was a major element and she found one in Yan.
An R-rated
girl gang, team-up film with Harley Quinn? I’m intrigued, I would love to see
other characters such as Poison Ivy and Catwoman featured as they’ve been
rumored for months as well. Hopefully it comes together soon; I know I’m not
alone in wanting to see Robbie reprise Harley sooner rather than later.
