While
we don’t know much about what will be happening in the MCU following the impending
events of Avengers 4, we do know that the film following the superhero
team-up will be a sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. We know that Tom
Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will return as Peter Parker, Michelle Jones
and Ned, respectively however, we have some new villain news.
According
to Collider, Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to play the villain, Mysterio in the
movie. There also is news from Variety that Michael Keaton’s Vulture is also
set to return in the untitled sequel as well. Mysterio is a high-profile antagonist
within the Spider-Man comics who is described as “a special effects wizard and
stunt man working for a major Hollywood studio with dreams of making a name for
himself in the film industry. However, he came to see his career in special
effects as a dead-end job. His attempts to become an actor were poorly
received, but he realized that his expertise in illusions could make him an
effective supervillain.”
Gyllenhaal
being cast in this role is fantastic news as he’s one of the most talented
actors working today. Interestingly enough, he was being eyed to play
Spider-Man years ago and now he’ll enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe as an
antagonist. Keaton returning as Vulture is not surprising following the ending
of the movie, but he’s welcomed back by all fans as his performance was one of
the better ones by any villain in a Marvel movie thus far.
