In our last article, we were talking about the director of last year’s Best Picture, Spotlight, now let’s get to what’s been going on with the director of 2014’s Best Picture, Birdman, Alejandro G. Inarritu. The man who is only one of three filmmakers ever to win back-to-back Academy Awards for Best Director seemed to be headed to television before running into a bit of trouble with Starz, the network that would be the home for his show titled, The One Percent. The premium network has since dropped the show but Inarritu is searching for a new network to house the project, per Collider.

The One Percent follows a broken Midwestern family trying to save their farm from financial ruin before a twist will affect their lives forever. The show was to star Ed Helms and Hilary Swank and was pushed because of the crazy filming schedule that went over for The Revenant. Helms has since dropped out with Greg Kinnear signing on as Swank’s co-star and with Inarritu trying to take on a production with similar filming techniques as his last film, the filming has been delayed. Emmanuel Lubezki and Jack Fisk will reunite with the director to provide the look for the show as they’ve worked with him previously in their roles as cinematographer and production designer. Inarritu will start filming in the next few months and it shouldn’t be too long till it finds a new home with Amazon, Netflix and HBO as the front runners.

I’m a huge fan of Birdman and unfortunately, haven’t had a chance to see The Revenant but seeing Inarritu’s first foray into television should be a real treat because of his impeccable direction and visual style. There are also rumors of Westworld star, Ed Harris interested in having a role on the show if his schedule allows it. This could be one of the best up-and-coming shows so keep an eye out for it!
