Will Ferrell to Lead Golf Comedy Series Resembling PGA vs. LIV Golf Rivalry

by Darian Scalamoni
Will Ferrell (Anchorman, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby) has been a massive sports fan his entire life. It shows in some of his film decisions as he's already been in films and television shows revolving around basketball, racecar driving and baseball. Now, Ferrell is aiming towards the golf world.

According to an exclusive from Deadline, Ferrell and his production company, Gloria Sanchez Productions will team with Rian Johnson and his production banner, T-Street to develop a comedic television series for him to star in. The series revolves around a professional golfer who leaves the PGA to become the face of a controversial new league, echoing a real-life situation with many golfers leaving the PGA Tour to head to the new, Saudi-backed LIV golf.

The report notes that the series will be in similar tone to some of Ferrell's past films such as Blades of Glory and Semi-Pro. Ferrell was a mainstay on Saturday Night Live for years and has since appeared in smaller parts of television series such as The Office, 30 Rock and Eastbound & Down. He also starred in the dark comedy series The Shrink Next Door based on the podcast of the same name alongside Paul Rudd.

Both production companies involved with the currently untitled golf series have had success recently in the TV business. T-Street is coming off Rian Johnson's popular Peacock series, Poker Face, while Ferrell's Gloria Sanchez Productions just wrapped its three-season run of Netflix's Dead to Me starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini.

Ferrell will star in the Amazon wedding comedy film You're Cordially Invited opposite Reese Witherspoon. Before that, Ferrell will play the CEO of Mattel in Greta Gerwig's highly anticipated film Barbie. He'll also voice a dog named Reggie in Strays which is due in theaters June 9.
