Streaming
networks are quickly become juggernauts. Between Netflix that has big time
original shows like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Bloodline, Stranger Things and the Marvel shows (just to name a few) and Hulu,
who has started to gain huge viewership due to their own original programming
like 11.22.63, The Path, Casual and they’re
even developing their own Marvel series, Amazon seems to be lost in the shuffle.
Their newest talent they have brought in to helm a series though could give
them tons of momentum. According to Deadline,
Matthew Weiner, the creator of Mad Men
will return to TV with an anthology series for Amazon.
Mad Men was a critical darling
throughout its seven-season run on AMC. Though that TV show took place in the
1960s, this new series will be placed in the present day and will take place
all around the world. Amazon paid $70 million for an eight-episode installment
so they have a lot of faith in this going forward.
They
bolster some great original content already with Transparent (which is one of my favorite shows), Mozart in the Jungle and is trying to do
their own Mad Men-esque show with the upcoming Good Girls Revolt. They missed out with Woody Allen’s series, Crisis in Six Scenes as that show just
did not work at all. But, this upcoming show from Weiner could be something
magnificent for the streaming service.
