Netflix Finally Finds Their Successful Ryan Murphy Projects; Renews 'Monster' & 'The Watcher' For Additional Seasons
by Darian Scalamoni
Ryan Murphy signed an incredibly lucrative development deal with Netflix back in 2018, which would pay the mega producer, $300 million over five years. Murphy, the architect of such series American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Glee and Pose, based on resume, would be worth such a deal. However, there's one major problem, none of those particular projects are shows that were developed for Netflix and up until recently, his shows for the streamer haven't lived up to the same acclaim and viewership. That has since changed all but overnight with his two latest series being some of Netflix's biggest of 2022.
Netflix has renewed Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Watcher for additional series. The former, Monster series will be moving forward as an anthology following other notorious who left a mark on society. As of now, there is no indication on whether that means we will see more frightening serial killers or just other figures in history that impacted the world at large. With that news, it appears Monster could serve as Netflix's version of American Crime Story. Monster has been renewed for at least two more additional seasons. The first installment that followed the cannibal murderer Jeffrey Dahmer is the second most-viewed English language original on Netflix and will surpass 1 billion viewing hours in the coming weeks.
The Watcher, a chilling thriller that starred Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale and Jennifer Coolidge and debuted on Netflix in October 2022, has been renewed for one more season. The series follows Watts and Cannavale as married couple, Nora and Dean Brannock who move into what they believe to be a beautiful, suburban home in New Jersey before receiving troubling letters and interactions with ominous neighbors turning their ideal new home into a tormented nightmare.
What do you guys think about the news of renewals for Monster and The Watcher for Netflix? Did you watch either or both of these massive hits? Who would you like to see Ryan Murphy develop new seasons of Monster around?
