'Yellowstone's' Third Episode Brings a Bar Fight to the Duttons Doorstep

Following the two-episode premiere for the fifth season of Yellowstone, the third episode titled 'Tall Drink of Water' begins to bring the audience the dramatics that the show is best known for, this time revolving around new Chief of Staff, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly).

Following a deal in which Beth makes to screw Market Equities and their CEO Caroline Warner (Jacki Weaver), she exclaims to husband Rip (Cole Hauser) that she "really fucked somebody over today. It felt great." In typical Beth Dutton fashion, this gets her further into trouble as she heads to the bunkhouse to celebrate amongst the cowboys and cowgirls alike. Once the party moves over to a local bar though, this is where things hit the fan. As Rip stands off to the side watching his wife dance on the dance floor, another drunken married woman puts her hands all over him. He smiles and laughs at the patron's impending doom as Beth smashes a beer bottle over her head leading to a brawl between security guards, the Dutton ranch and other people at the bar. It's clear that trouble always "finds" the Duttons though Rip advised against having a night out for Lloyd's (Forrie J. Smith) birthday, the actions taken by Beth gets her arrested for assault that could lead to political turmoil for her father John (Kevin Costner) in his new role as Governor of Montana.

Additionally, the Dutton siblings took center stage in this week's episode as Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) had a meeting with the Market Equities attorney Ellis Steele (John Emmet Tracy) and newcomer Sarah Atwood (Dawn Oliveiri) who audiences were introduced to just last week. Atwood looks to be a comparable adversary to Beth in the strong female archetype that the show endows, however, she is starting with who she believes to be the weakest link in the Dutton chain, Jamie. The adopted Dutton believes he has the upper hand on a potential lawsuit set forth by Steele, however, Atwood blinds Jamie with her beauty and brains by making him believe he has the upper hand when in reality, it appears that her character is set to be a real linchpin for Season 5.

Also, within the episode, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) meets with Native American leader Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and his right-hand man Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) to discuss the funeral proceedings and ritual done for his late newborn, John. We discovered last episode that his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille) would like their son to be buried upon his father's grand ranch so that she could visit him whenever she wanted. Losing a child, let alone a newborn due to the impact of the car crash Monica and Tate (Brecken Merrill) were in in last week's episode is a heavy topic for any entertainment program. We see the lasting effects as Monica has an emotional outburst throwing herself onto the floor of their kitchen. Kayce determines that he needs to put his family first, so he heads to the farm to discuss with his father that he is stepping down as Livestock Commissioner. Though John seems worried and upset by the decision, he understands and agrees to bury Kayce's son on the property.

Though this episode had a lot of moving parts, I think it was the strongest of the three thus far. Do you guys think Beth's arrest will lead to issues within the political sphere of her father's new role as Governor? What do you think will happen between Sarah Atwood and Jamie Dutton at dinner? Let us know your predictions on next week's episode and your thoughts on Episode 3!
