Netflix is always looking for IP to mine for new franchises and even Guy Ritchie isn't off limits when it comes to this battle of streaming services. Ritchie's film, The Gentlemen, is set for a sequel series on Netflix and as of today, the show has its first star.

According to Variety, Theo James is set to star in the series which as of now, will go by the same name, The Gentlemen, as the 2019 feature. The original film starred Matthew McConaughey as Mickey Pearson, an American who supervises a massive marijuana empire whilst living in London under the guise of British high society. James is set to play Eddie Halstead in the series, who has inherited his father's estate which sits atop the same weed empire built and run by Pearson. Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam, Jeremy Strong, Michelle Dockery, Colin Farrell and Henry Golding all starred in the film with McConaughey but none of those stars have been confirmed to return for the series. However, due to the significance of Pearson within the plot, it's possible we see characters from the film reappear in the series.

Guy Ritchie is set to executive produce the show and also co-wrote the pilot script with Matthew Read. Ritchie is also set to serve as director for the first two episodes of the Netflix series. The esteemed filmmaker just had another project announced earlier this week undertaking a film titled The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare which is set to star Henry Cavill and Eiza Gonzalez. Ritchie also filmed The Interpreter this year starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Antony Starr and Emily Beecham.

James is currently appearing in Season 2 of the HBO anthology series, The White Lotus. Earlier this year, he starred in another HBO show, The Time Traveler's Wife.

What do you guys think about this announcement? Do you like this move for Netflix? Did you see The Gentlemen? Let me know in the comments!
