I recently watched Black Mass for the first time and I have to say, I was very impressed with Johnny Depp’s performance. He was garnering awards buzz for months for the role but was passed up when it came to the Academy Awards. Having said that, it was evident that it was one of Depp’s best roles in a long, long time. Today, The Playlist reports that he’ll be involved in another intriguing project that could maybe give him more awards buzz. Depp is set to star in the independent film titled, Labyrinth. The film is about the detective that investigated the murders of rappers Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.

Though the premise is interesting, it is a film that I would never peg Depp to do at this point in his career, especially about two superstar MC’s from the 90s rap scene. It is surprising but I’m very excited and think Depp can succeed very much in this film. It will be produced by Good Films which recently backed The Infiltrator this summer starring Bryan Cranston. The same director of that film, Brad Furman, who also directed The Lincoln Lawyer is set to direct Labyrinth.

Depp has already starred in Alice Through the Looking Glass as the Mad Hatter this year, but will be seen next reprising another role of his, Jack Sparrow in the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series subtitled, Dead Men Tell No Tales.
