With
awards season rapidly approaching, it’s important to recognize the films that
will most likely be in the conversation for Oscars, Golden Globes and other
awards. One film that has been a favorite since it was announced was the on
screen adaptation of August Wilson’s play, Fences.
The play was adored by many audiences and it’s a great first step when the two
leads from the Broadway show return for the film.
Fences stars both Denzel Washington and
Viola Davis as they return to their roles they portrayed on stage. The film
takes place in the 1950s and revolves around an African-American former
baseball star who is now a trash collector, crossing the race barrier to serve
as a driver, not just a barrel lifter. Davis plays his wife, Rose within the
film as their family constantly deals with problems as Washington’s lead
character of Troy plays a bitter man who is more disappointed in what he hasn’t
achieved rather than what he has. Rose is just as tough as a mother as Troy is
as a father, proving so within the final seconds of the trailer in which she
reveals how upset she is with her husband’s selfishness. It’s clear within the
preview that this will be a family drama, enriched with tremendous performances
from the leads.
In
addition to being the star of the movie, Denzel Washington is also directing
the feature. Fences opens in theaters
on December 25th. Along with Washington and Davis, it also stars
Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson and Saniyya
Sidney. Check out the first trailer below!
