Kubo and the Two Strings is the latest stop motion animation film from Laika (Coraline, Paranorman, The Boxtrolls). The movie follows the story of a young boy named Kubo, who under unfortunate circumstances that happens in his life goes on an adventure with a monkey and a beetle. They go on a quest to find three mysterious objects that Kubo believes he can use to fight evil in his past. The movie then takes unexpected turns throughout and we learn more about the characters as we go on. Kubo and the Two Strings is not only Laika’s best film, it is also one of the absolute best films of the year.

Similar to Zootopia, which was released earlier in the year, Kubo and the Two Strings reminds me why I love animation films so much. There is never a dull moment in this film, I was consistently entertained. Additionally, there are so many themes that are so mature and thoughtful; not many kids will pick up on these themes. However, that is completely fine because Kubo and the Two Strings is one of those animations that anyone can really enjoy. The characters are so amazing; there is not one unlikeable in the entire film.

The character that stole the entire show was the Monkey, who is voiced by Charlize Theron. Her character is so terrific and she was a great asset to Kubo. The Beetle is voiced by Matthew McConaughey, and he is another character who is also brilliant; the chemistry between the Monkey and the Beetle is astounding. Rooney Mara voices the Sisters, who are the villains of the film. They are menacing, evil, and dangerous. The voice acting from everyone is so top notch, and every character has motivations and a purpose.

The action sequences are also spectacular, they are so well directed and they are very well done. There is not one single flaw I have with the film; everything worked so well and watching this movie made me want Hollywood to make more original films like these. Kubo and the Two Strings is unfortunately doing awful at the box office, and it’s a shame because it is original, unpredictable, and flat out great. I implore everyone to see Kubo and the Two Strings because it is without question, one of the best animations movies I have ever seen.
