Back in 2015, there were rumblings of a Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz biopic that was scripted by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network) but here we are in 2017 with no news other than two-time Oscar winner, Cate Blanchett being attached to play Ball. Now, according to a report from Collider, Amazon has acquired the rights for the planned biopic as the studio looks to find someone to play Arnaz.

The current rumor is that another former Oscar-winner, Javier Bardem is the favorite for Desi in the movie which is titled simply, Lucy and Desi. The film will follow the couple’s twenty-year marriage, their time as co-stars in one of the biggest television shows of all-time (I Love Lucy) and their lives after getting a divorce in 1960. I’m incredibly excited that this movie is finally gaining some steam with Blanchett and Sorkin still attached. Bardem would add another layer to this and I think he’d be a great Desi Arnaz to Blanchett’s Lucille Ball.

Blanchett is set to star in Thor: Ragnarok as the villainous Hela and has an even bigger 2018 upcoming starring in Ocean’s Eight, the live-action Jungle Book directed by Andy Serkis and Richard Linklater’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette. Bardem will be seen later this year in Darren Aronofsky’s mother!
