'Cobra Kai' Star Xolo Mariduena Becomes a Superhero in First Trailer for Latino-Led DC Film 'Blue Beetle'

by Darian Scalamoni
I've been a fan of Xolo Mariduena since he appeared on Cobra Kai back when the series was not only a Netflix hit but a hit on YouTube Premium. Fast forward years later and the young Latin actor is leading his own superhero franchise, DC's Blue Beetle. The trailer for the long-awaited debut of the scarab enhanced hero has finally released and you can check it out below!

Blue Beetle follows a young man named Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who returns home full of career aspirations only to discover that his home environment is not the same as it was when he left for school. As he tries to figure out what he wants to do upon returning to his hometown, he finds himself in possession of an ancient artifact of biotechnology called the Scarab. Soon after, the bug-like device chooses Reyes to be his symbiotic host (in a Venom-like fashion) bestowing him with a suit of armor reminiscent of the MCU's version of Spider-Man, loaded with AI generated abilities and powers shifting his life and destiny to become the titular hero known as the Blue Beetle.

The film looks to be DC's answer to Marvel's Spider-Man character, and with a charming presence such as Xolo Mariduena, it just might be a recipe for success. Blue Beetle is also known in the comics for being good friends with Booster Gold, who was announced to be getting his own HBO Max series during James Gunn's announcement of DC Studios planned Chapter One of their new cinematic universe for all media. Mariduena is joined Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Damien Alcazar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Harvey Guillen and Susan Sarandon as the villainous Victoria Kord.

Check out the first trailer below for Blue Beetle! The film is directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) and hits theaters everywhere on August 18.
