First Trailer for Taika Waititi's Delayed Soccer Film 'Next Goal Wins' Reveals a True Underdog Comedy Starring Michael Fassbender

by Darian Scalamoni
Coming off the massive success of Taika Waititi's pair of films, Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, he had set up his next project, Next Goal Wins, an underdog comedy based on a documentary as his creative venture...all the way back in September 2019. Now, fast forward to April 2023 and we finally have a trailer for the film.

Next Goal Wins is inspired by a true story that pretty much happened (according to Waititi's playful trailer). It follows the American Samoa soccer team which is infamously known for their 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001 to Australia. Next Goal Wins takes place years later as Dutch-American coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) is hired in hope to turn the luck around for the Samoans and help them qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on the precipice of the World Cup Qualifiers.

The trailer in typical fashion of the New Zealand director is playful and filled with laughs and charm. We see Ronger fired from his previous coaching job before trekking off to the South Pacific to change things for the better.

Check out the first trailer for Next Goal Wins! The feel-good sports comedy stars Fassbender, Elisabeth Moss, Will Arnett, Oscar Kightley, Uli Latukefu, Rachel House, Kaimana, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Chris Alosio and Rhys Darby. Next Goal Wins hits theaters on November 17.
