'About My Father' Trailer Reveals the True Power of Family in the Maniscalco Name

by Darian Scalamoni
It seems we'll have a clash of meta father-son comedies hitting theaters on May 26 this year. Not only that, but both will be led by stand-up comedians trying their hand at leading their own feature films. Sebastian Maniscalco (The Irishman, Green Book) is one of the most popular and recognizable stand-ups on the planet and now, he wants to share his relationship with his father who is often brought up in his act doing so in a fictional spin with About My Father.

About My Father stars Maniscalco as himself with Robert De Niro (Raging Bull, Taxi Driver) returning to comedy to play his embarrassing Italian dad. While almost everyone is admittedly self-conscious to some degree about their families, Sebastian's dad is someone who gives him such an uneasy feeling that he can't bring him around anywhere. That is until this film where he tries to intermix his family along with his fiancés for a Fourth of July holiday weekend and of course, hilarity ensues. As he is making the tough decision whether or not to bring his Italian immigrant father along with him, he insists that he must come along, or he'll be alone.

We see throughout the coming attraction that Sebastian's fiancé (played by Leslie Bibb) and her family are everything that their family is not: affectionate, supportive and in some cases, outlandish; however, the Maniscalco family does everything in their power to make it all work. Maniscalco also co-wrote the script with Austen Earl which serves well due to his real relationship with his dad serving as inspiration for the film.

This is far from Maniscalco's first role on-screen as he had a supporting role in Best Picture winner Green Book. About My Father also serves as a reunion of sorts as Maniscalco also has a role in Martin Scorsese's Netflix gangster flick The Irishman in which De Niro stars. The film has a rather starry ensemble in addition to Maniscalco, De Niro and Bibb with Kim Cattrall, Anders Holm, Brett Dier and David Rasche also starring.
