First Trailer for 'Swarm' Showcases Donald Glover's New Amazon Series that Crosses Into Jordan Peele-Esque Horror

by Darian Scalamoni
As a massive fan of Donald Glover and his debut TV show Atlanta, I was curious to see what would be next on his agenda to accomplish in terms of flexing his creative muscles. It was then announced that Glover was working on his first series for Amazon Prime Video after signing an exclusive first-look deal with the streamer, an obsessive horror thriller surrounding a mega fan whose dark fandom leads her to unexpected places. That show would become swarm which is set to debut on the streamer on March 17, and we have the first full-length trailer.

Swarm stars Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah, The Deuce) as a young woman named Dre, whose extreme fandom shines through for one special fictional artist, Ni'Jah (who purposely closely resembles superstar pop icon Beyonce). However, as Dre becomes obsessed as a member of the artist's "Swarm" of fans, she begins to see the dark and twisted repercussions that it has on her entire life. As I suggest in my title, it seems that Glover and collaborator Janine Nabers, who previously worked on Atlanta as a writer and co-executive producer are going for a vibe similar to what Jordan Peele has brought to the table with films like Get Out and Us, moving swiftly into a horror vibe with black culture intertwined.

Fishback, who is set to star in the newest Transformers: Rise of the Beasts film alongside Anthony Ramos first caught my eye for her terrific work in HBO drama The Deuce. She then impressed to the masses with her role in Judas and the Black Messiah which earned her a BAFTA nomination. Her teaming with Glover is exciting as she is an up-and-coming superstar actress in her own right and Glover is a terrific creative force that is giving her a platform to shine with Swarm. Fishback is joined by Chloe Bailey, Damson Idris, Rory Culkin, Kiersey Clemons, Rickey Thompson, Paris Jackson and Byron Bowers in the series.

Check out the first trailer below for Swarm which is co-created, produced and directed by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers. Swarm hits Amazon Prime Video on March 17.
