Ridley Scott Marks His Territory in the Sand with His 'Gladiator' Sequel Getting a November 2024 Release Date

by Darian Scalamoni
We had reported earlier in January that recent Oscar-nominee Paul Mescal (Aftersun, Normal People) had signed onto two major projects. The first being a 20-year shoot of the musical Merrily We Roll Along directed by Richard Linklater, but the other project was an untitled Gladiator sequel helmed by the original's director Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, House of Gucci). Now, we have a date for that film, November 22, 2024.

Deadline reported the news of the release date early on Friday. In our earlier report, we laid out the details of the project where Mescal will play Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen's character Lucilla from the first film. His character is also the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus. There are no further details on the project as of now, but we'll be sure to provide more details when we here at Cinema Wave become aware of them.

Mescal was just nominated for an Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for the indie drama Aftersun. He has many other projects in the works as well, next appearing in the sci-fi thriller Foe opposite Saoirse Ronan and Aaron Pierre. He'll also star in Andrew Haigh's next film Strangers alongside Claire Foy, Jamie Bell and Andrew Scott.

Ridley Scott released two films in 2021 with House of Gucci and The Last Duel. He's currently directing and producing the AppleTV+ series, Sinking Spring which stars Brian Tyree Henry, Marin Ireland and Michael Mando. That series will release on the streamer in late-2023.
