Oprah
Winfrey has grown to become very good friends with Lee Daniels, who directed
her previously in The Butler but it
seems that their friendship could lead to another film between the two talents.
According to The
Wrap, Paramount Pictures has secured the rights for Daniels to develop a
remake of Terms of Endearment with
Winfrey in talks to star as Aurora.
Terms of Endearment followed Aurora and
her daughter Emma as they went through the trials and tribulations of life
together. The original 1983 film starred Shirley MacLaine as Aurora and Debra
Winger as Emma as the movie was directed by the legendary 3-time Oscar winner,
James L. Brooks. The movie scored 11 Oscar nominations and won 5 awards: Best
Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress for MacLaine and
Best Supporting Actor for Jack Nicholson’s performance as Garrett. I think this
could be a terrific remake with the talent involved especially since Daniels
got a fantastic performance out of Winfrey in The Butler back in 2013. Here’s hoping that an actress like Kerry
Washington or Tessa Thompson are cast in the role of Emma!
Winfrey
has been on screen plenty since her retiring from talk show duties. She was
recently seen in Selma and is set to
appear in Ava DuVernay’s sophomore effort as well, A Wrinkle in Time. She’s also set to star in the upcoming HBO movie,
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
with Courtney B. Vance and Rose Byrne. Daniels has recently been in the
spotlight on television with his FOX series Empire
and Star but is also attached to
direct the long-in-development Richard Pryor biopic starring Mike Epps as the
iconic comedian.
