Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon) is one of the most unique auteurs in film today so it’s not a shock that he’d want to go into a longer form of storytelling. Well, he’s doing just that and expanding his sandbox to television. According to The Playlist, Refn will direct and co-write Too Old To Die Young, which has been greenlit with a straight to series order of 10 episodes that will be housed and available for streaming on Amazon.

Too Old To Die Young will follow criminals in Los Angeles and looks to follow most of what Refn is accustomed to with his previous movies. The show will explore various characters and their journeys of being killers and protectors within Los Angeles. This isn’t surprising at all and sounds like most of what the Danish filmmaker has done in the past but I’m hoping it’s more in the vein of Drive rather than something like Only God Forgives. The series is eyeing several big-name talents and we’ll provide the casting information as soon as its available.

Amazon seems to be taking off and really expanding their original series with tons of A-list talent attached. Transparent and Goliath have taken off as some of the best shows around right now and the streaming giant has upcoming projects with David O. Russell that has Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore to star as well as a drama series from the creator of Mad Men, Matthew Weiner. Refn is coming off of his horror/fashion world thriller film, The Neon Demon that starred Elle Fanning, Bella Heathcote and Christina Hendricks. Too Old To Die Young is expected to be his next venture and should be ready by 2018.
