HBO's Award-Winning Drama 'Succession' to End with Season 4
by Darian Scalamoni
The chronicle of the Roy family drama in HBO's Succession is finally coming to an end. That's right, series creator Jesse Armstrong confirmed that the popular series that redefined the scope of the premium network post-Game of Thrones will be ending with the upcoming fourth season in an interview with The New Yorker. Armstrong created and has served as showrunner for the prestige drama throughout its 4-season run amassing 13 Emmy Awards along the way. Succession had made a star out of Armstrong as a creative force in the industry but has also made stars of its cast namely Jeremy Strong, Matthew Macfadyen, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin and Nicholas Braun. Armstrong said of the series' end, "there's a promise in the title of Succession. I've never thought this could go on forever. The end has always been kind of present in my mind. From season two, I've been trying to think: Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that?" One would have to think that again, in the pure definition of the word, Succession, the passing of the torch might be Brian Cox's Logan Roy losing the business to his children: Kendall, Shiv and Roman by the end of the series, but for now, all we can do is speculate.
HBO declined to comment on the specificity of Armstrong's words, however, they did confirm that the upcoming season will be its last. Succession broke out in its freshman campaign at HBO, later earning the Emmy Award for Best Drama Series for its second and third installments. Many of the stars of the show have also earned honors for their tremendous work in the series that is based around family, business and the chaos that is intertwined despite efforts otherwise. The series has also had bigger names join the series in guest appearances as of late with Alexander Skarsgard and Adrien Brody being some of the latest playing within the Waystar RoyCo sandbox.
Succession has an all-star team of creatives that craft the show alongside Armstrong with Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and The Menu writer-director Mark Mylod serving as just some of the producers of the show. Succession currently serves as an anchor for the premium cable network after the success of some past HBO shows such as Game of Thrones, Veep and Silicon Valley. Now, the show joins The White Lotus, Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Industry, The Last of Us and House of the Dragon as the big established series for HBO. Succession will begin airing its fourth and final season on March 26. You can check out the teaser for the upcoming season right here at Cinema Wave.
