Cult Horror Hit 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Sequel in the Works; Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt In Talks to Return
The report also brings forth news that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge, Love Life) will direct coming from a script by Leah McKendrick. The original film was released in 1997 and follows four friends (played by Prinze Jr., Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe) who are bound due to a tragic accident and are reunited when they're being hunted by a murderous man with wielding a hook. The original was a massive hit and lead to sequels and inevitably launched the careers of all four stars. There is no word yet if Phillippe or Gellar will reprise their roles.
Robinson and McKendrick recently pitched a new take on the horror franchise due to the success of Scream and its reboot bringing back old faces to mix in with hot new stars such as Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding and Melissa Barrera. When the female tandem pitched a similar idea to bring in fresh talent to intermingle with the stars of the original, Sony bought the pitch in the room. They are also said to be big fans of Robinson's last directorial effort, 2022's Do Revenge for Netflix which starred Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes. Robinson also recently wrote Thor: Love and Thunder for Marvel.
I think the new passing of the torch-type approach of spinoffs and franchises such as Creed, Halloween and the aforementioned Scream has been a great approach for recognizable and iconic IP. This sounds great and I hope that Sony can convince the rest of the franchise stars to return.
