HBO's Hitman Comedy Series 'Barry' to End with Upcoming Fourth Season as Star & Creator Bill Hader Reveals First Trailer

by Darian Scalamoni
It must be the year of all of my favorite shows coming to an end, as HBO's crime dramedy series Barry is due to end with its upcoming fourth season. The show joins Succession as HBO's catalogue of successful premium programming is shifting with the conclusion of two of their most ambitious and original shows on the network.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in Spring 2020, production shut down on Barry's third season. Whilst stuck in their homes, Hader and his virtual writer's room put that time to good use as they plotted out the fourth and final season of the show, along with re-writing the entire third season before the series began shooting. It's official that that fourth and final season will begin airing on April 16 and the first trailer has arrived along with the news of the show's finale.

The teaser plots out an intense aftermath of titular character Barry Berkman, a former military officer turned hitman, who moved to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming an actor, now in prison after being turned over to the police by his acting teacher, Gene Cousineau (played by the Emmy-winning Henry Winkler). We see Barry making a series of phone calls to all different characters within the show (and his life). Whether it be Cousineau himself, his ex-girlfriend Sally (Sarah Goldberg), his Chechen buddy NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) or his gun-for-hire handler Fuchs (Stephen Root). We also see Barry hallucinating seeing this group within the prison yard loathing his very real situation within the penitentiary. The question for the end of the show is "Can Barry be redeemed?"

You can make that assessment yourself if you catch up on the past three seasons of Barry and check out the first trailer for the fourth and final season! Barry premieres on HBO on April 16 and new episodes will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
