Wes Anderson Drops First Trailer for 1950s Set Space Exploration Film, 'Asteroid City'
by Darian Scalamoni
Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom) is one of the most recognizable, stylized and unique filmmakers of all-time. His latest upcoming film Asteroid City still has the stunning visuals that many clamor for when it comes to his movies, however, it seems even more intriguing and ambitious than anything he's ever done before. Asteroid City is set in the 1950s in the titular fictional American desert town. Most of the film takes place during a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention which is designed to bring together young people and parents in an academic environment before anarchy ensues due to a major world event hitting at an opportune time. By the way, this world event is the arrival of aliens.
The trailer is filled with many of the familiar Wes Anderson tropes and is laden with a number of recognizable talents amongst its cast. Asteroid City will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival before getting a limited release on June 16. Then the film is scheduled to get wider expansion on June 23.
